I thought this review of “Amazing Grace” was particularly well done. The movie is, in my view, wonderful and inspiring, a fine example that good, uplifting movies are still being made.
It includes one of the most memorable lines ever in a movie, by Albert Finney playing John Newton: “I know I am a great sinner, and that Christ is a great Savior.” Those interested in reading about William Wilberforce, and the role his Christian conversion played in his opposition to slavery may want to read this Wikipedia entry.
Has anyone who has seen it have any comments on the criticism that it tends to devalue the impact of his religion on his life and in particular on his anti-slavery? I don’t know if that is true, but it’s a comment I’ve read by several reviewers.
Clark, I’ve heard that comment, and you could make the argument that Wilberforce could have been made more religious. His conversion experience is kind of brushed over. But John Newton’s religiosity is quite powerful, and his statement on Christ as a savior is worth the price of admission alone.
I don’t like films (like Spielberg’s “Amistad,” for example) that underplay religion and/or make the religious people into fanatics. But “Amazing Grace” does neither, imho.
I rarely get out and watch movies–I have young children–but this looks like one movie I will make special arrangements to see.
I recommend this movie. It is great. I wouldn’t nominate it for an Emmy, but I left the theatre feeling like a better person.
Drew, I really hope this movie doesn’t get an Emmy either, but it might be Oscar-worthy. :))
I haven’t seen this movie, but I will, we need more good movies like this. Thanks for sharing the review.
