Of Dads and Missionaries

Missionaries get to phone home on Mother’s Day and Christmas. But fathers don’t get a call.

But it’s still possible for fathers of missionaries to get something on their special day, with our help.

When my daughter first arrived in the airport, an LDS lady took a photo of the arriving missionaries and texted it to all the parents. And I’ve been blessed since then because people in my daughter’s mission will snap pictures and either text us or post them on the mission Facebook page.

I’ve also adopted this practice, of snapping pictures of missionaries and letting them type in the phone number of folks so I can text the picture.

I invite you to make a father’s day and text him a picture of his missionary. And while you’re at it, take the chance to let the fathers in your life know how much you love them as well.

  1. We must end this matriarchal privilege by ending calls home on mother’s day. Those mother’s should be less selfish anyway.

  2. Since this is the Internet, I can’t tell you you are drunk or do speak in jest.

Like with any custom it is hard to rescind something that has such a hold in the hearts of so many. So I don’t envision a time when missionaries are expected to forego contact with their families entirely or even limit interactions to as little as a yearly chat.

  3. And though I have no idea whether this post had anything to do with it, I thank the universe for the person who took a picture of my missionary daughter on Father’s Day and texted it to my husband.

  4. The guy in the middle resembles Wallace Shawn (Vizzini/Grand Nagus Zeck).

  5. This past weekend after the Mormon Choir of Washington concert an audience member thought “the guy in the middle” looked awfully familiar. Then she realized that “the guy in the middle” looks a lot like Scott Hamilton. That might have been influenced by the fact that “the guy in the middle” performed a dance during our performance of “Poco Loco” from Coco.
