  1. My gospel essentials teacher as I was considering being baptized and the first few months after I was baptized was really, really good. He had a way of explaining things that made sense. It was almost as if the things he concentrated on were aimed directly at me and my worries. That is an incredibly important calling.

  2. Love this week’s cartoon, Joanna. You have a talent!

I echo Geoff’s comment on the importance of good gospel essentials teachers. And, don’t forget the need for other members to attend the class as well. Without a group of supportive members attending, it can be difficult to have a meaningful discussion in class.

My life has been filled with good teachers, too numerous to name individually, but my junior high band teacher stands out as someone who was truly a good teacher. She did more than teach me to play an instrument, she taught me about life and how to face trial without complaint. She battled breast cancer and continued teaching and conducting concerts. She was a remarkable woman!

  3. My parents have taught me the huge majority of the good things I know. They have executed their stewardship over me extremely well.

I learned something from each of my mission companions, but my penultimate comp was really great. He taught me that you can love someone before you know them, before you even see them. I just sent an email to that good man.

Working with the brethren of the Seattle North Stake presidency and high council was like having a dumptruck full of good things backed up to my mind.

  4. I come from a family of teachers. My cousin Jena Vee Clegg Holland was a dedicated teacher who taught high school, traveled around the world, and went on to teach at BYU. She did all this with a family in a day most women did not work. I am honored to have known her.

I have several other uncles and cousins are/were also educators. My father taught high school for a few years and my mother taught elementary school. One of my sisters was also an elementary school teacher. I graduated with a BS in elementary education and taught a few years in pre-school, kindergarten and second grade.

I am grateful for several teachers of good things in my life. Mrs. Vandermeade in the fourth grade made school fun and was patient with me. At BYU I enjoyed several wonderful teachers. Robert Matthews gave me a deeper understanding and testimony of the Savior. James Jacobs a professor of children’s literature, was enthusiastic and an example of joyful teaching. Wade E Miller was a fascinating science professor.
