Finding The Right Tunnel Is A Lot Like Raising Children

I live in Utah. There are no train tunnels in Utah. On a recent trip to London, England to teach self-government principles there, we found ourselves alone in a maze of tunnels under the city of London.

At first our friend, Jason, told us about the tunnels and which ones to take. He even took us on a training trip through the tunnels so that we could feel more confidently about underground travel and to get a vision of where we were going and how to get back, when the time arrived. One thought I had recently

I think some people want to turn weekly Church into the equivalent of a graduate level seminar (or at least a senior capstone course).

Even though I have a PhD and love intellectual discussions, I can’t think of anything worse.  The gospel needs to stay “small and simple.”

(I’ve seen a few mainstream Protestant denominations that do treat Sunday school like a graduate seminar; That’s one reason those denominations are dying off, though it’s more a symptom than the cause).

Power of the Priesthood

Albert Ellis QuoteUnlike many, I don’t believe that a patriarchal priesthood creates a power imbalance that leads to gendered injustices, such as domestic violence. I don’t think it is necessary to give women the priesthood or adopt identical family roles. Yet, though I don’t believe they are cause-and-effect, these things do play into a power dynamic that exists independently. I believe this power dynamic can be changed if we are willing. I realize that in a few short sentences, I have managed to alienate both sides of the divide. But I think my perspective, as a woman faithful in the Church and a survivor of domestic violence, has something to add to the conversation.

My husband was not a member of the Church when I met him. I was a freshly-returned missionary, he was separated from his wife. We both worked at the same retail store. At some point, I invited him to hear the discussions in my parents’ home. During the course of his investigation, he confessed to me many problems in his past and present. Still stuck somewhat in the role of missionary, it was easy to forgive things that I would not have, had I been looking at him as a potential future mate. I think that’s why he was able to get to me.

Bodies For Sale! Teaching Modesty

50PercentOff“…Everyone is selling something,” I said as I talked to a young girl one evening.

Her mother had just made a comment about how the outfit the girl was wearing was “too revealing” and so she would need to go change it. The fifteen year old girl tilted her hip and rolled her eyes as she smirked at her mom. This smile meant, “I don’t care what you say. I like this outfit and I’m not changing it.” Continue reading
