‘That’s so gay’

The phrase ‘that’s so gay’ is the central issue in a civil lawsuit filed by the parents of Rebeka Rice.

Rice, now 18, was a freshman at Santa Rosa’s Maria Carillo High in California in when some classmates were giving her a hard time about her Mormon upbringing, asking her questions like: “Do you have 10 moms?” Rice’s sharp reply: “That’s so gay.”

A Black Badge of Mourning

Officer Anthony Jon Holly

When a police officer dies in the line of duty, it is customary for other officers in the region to place a black band of mourning over their police shields as a sign of respect. Officers traditionally wear this black band from the time of the officer’s death, until midnight the night of the funeral.

Yesterday, at midnight, the time to wear the black band of mourning ended, just hours after Glendale Police Officer Anthony Holly was laid to rest.

Kaizen: Continuous Improvement

According to Wikipedia, Kaizen is a Japanese word that means “change for the better” or “improvement”. The English translation of the word is “continuous improvement.”

Last week I participated in what is termed as a “Kaizen Event” or, more appropriately, a “continuous improvement event” where my team and I looked at a business process to identify and eliminate waste.

We utilized several six sigma tools (e.g.- activity of the operator, activity of the process, process map, etc.) in order to identify the waste and how best to eliminate that waste.

American Sign Language in the temple

When I attend the temple with my wife, I always look forward to an outpouring of the Spirit as I am instructed during the presentation of the endowment.

Friday night my wife and I enjoyed a special experience as we watched two hearing-impaired patrons view the endowment presented through American Sign Language and closed captioning.

Go, fight, win!

Once in a lifetime, a special teacher comes along and has a positive and tremendous impact for good on the lives of her students. Deanna Sauerbrunn was such a teacher for her students at Taylor Junior High in Mesa, Arizona.

For the record, Mrs. Sauerbrunn taught band at Taylor. Informally, she taught her students to love music and to love life. She had an unparalleled passion for both…and it showed.
